Reel production and creative direction

Reel and Video Production

A reel that follows a trend without a script gets a moment of attention and no memory. We build ours like a very short play.

Structure

Hook, build, payoff

Both founders come from theatre, and it shows in how we make short video. The opening has to earn the next three seconds. The middle gives a reason to stay. The ending pays off the promise. Tricks and trends come after that structure, not before.

Service

What we handle

  • Concept and script. Written before anyone books a location.
  • On-ground shoot direction. Someone directs the day, so footage is gathered to a plan.
  • Edit, sound design and captions. Sound carries more of a short video than most people expect, and captions are there for the many who watch without it.
  • Posting and performance review. What was saved, shared and replied to, and what to make next.

Planning

What we need before a shoot

  • What the video must make someone do, in one sentence.
  • Where it will run, because a vertical reel and a website film are different jobs.
  • People, places and permissions, sorted early. Filming people at events and schools needs consent.
  • Music and image rights checked. It is easier to choose clean audio than to replace it later.
Shoot day

How a shoot day is planned

A shoot day succeeds or fails before the camera comes out. We prefer a one-page plan: what must be captured, in what order, who is needed where and when, and what the fallback is if light, weather or people are not cooperating. A shot list keeps the day tied to the edit, so nothing essential is missing and nothing is filmed that will never be used.

Sound

The part that goes wrong most often

Viewers forgive rough pictures far more readily than poor sound. A clear voice recorded close to the speaker, a quiet room or a lapel microphone, and attention to background noise make a large difference. Music needs to be cleared for use, and captions should be included, since many people watch without sound.

Approvals

A simple approval path

StageWhat is reviewedWho decides
Concept and scriptThe idea and the wordsThe person who owns the brief

Repurposing

One shoot, several pieces

A good shoot yields more than one video. A long piece can be cut into shorter reels. A single interview can supply a headline quote, a caption and a clip for an ad. Planning the pieces before the shoot means the footage is gathered with them in mind, and each piece can be made to work in its own format.

Reel, film or both

FormatSuitsTrade-off

A short filmA story or an explanation that needs spaceFewer people will watch to the end
A seriesBuilding familiarity over timeNeeds a plan and sustained effort
People

Getting natural performances from non-actors

Most people freeze when a camera appears. Theatre teaches a useful trick: give them something to do. A person demonstrating a task, walking through a room or talking to a colleague looks more natural than one reciting lines. Keep the setup small, be patient, and let them do a few takes before you begin recording what you will actually use.

Video that supports a goal

If reels are meant to bring enquiries, the video should connect to a page and a tracked action. If they are meant to build presence, we measure saves, shares and profile visits, not raw views. Our social media marketing page explains how content is planned across a month.
