Film Marketing for Regional Cinema

A regional film often has a passionate audience that does not know it exists. The marketing task is to find those people and give them a date.

Release plan

What a digital plan contains

  1. Identity. A poster, a title treatment and a single line that says what the film is about.
  2. Teaser and trailer. Released in an order that builds curiosity, not all at once.
  3. Cast and crew content. Short interviews and clips that give the audience a person to follow.
  4. Audience building. Pages, communities and creators who already gather the film’s natural audience.
  5. Release week. Show timings, booking routes and reminders, tracked so that you know what worked.
  6. After release. Reactions, reviews and clips that help word of mouth carry the second week.

Method

How we approach the calendar

We work back from the release date and decide what must be true in each week. The reasoning follows our general campaign strategy, and the content side is described on reel and video production. Many small releases have no marketing budget to speak of, so we prioritise the few pieces of content that will carry the most.

Audience

Finding the natural audience

Every film has people who would love it and do not yet know it exists. Marathi cinema, in particular, has communities, pages and creators who follow the language, the region and its stories. Identify where those people gather, and give them something to share before you ask for anything. Once they care, dates and booking links become welcome, not intrusive.

Trailer

Sequencing the trailer and the first clips

Poster and titleAnnounce and give the film an identity
TeaserRaise curiosity without explaining
TrailerShow the story, cast and tone
Clips and cast contentGive people things to share
Release remindersTurn interest into action
Documentaries

An impact campaign for a documentary

A documentary’s audience often forms around a cause or a subject. We managed the impact campaign for Oslo, A Tail of Promise, a documentary on adoption and conscious living. The approach for such a film is to work with organisations, communities and screenings, and to make the conversation around the film as valuable as the film itself.

Release week

A checklist for release week

  • Show timings and booking links on one page, and check that each one works.
  • Daily content: reactions, clips and thanks.
  • A person answering questions from the public.
  • A plan for sharing honest reviews and audience reactions.
  • A quiet note to the team that the work is public and worth sharing.
Ambassadors

The cast and crew are your best channel

Actors, director and crew have their own audiences and their own reasons to be proud. Give them clear, easy things to share: a short clip, a poster, a message. Their posts carry more warmth than any brand page.

Language

Regional language details

Subtitles help people who do not speak the language and those watching without sound. Thumbnails and text should be readable on a small screen. Where a film travels, consider versions for other regions, noting that the cultural details that make it special are the reason to keep it authentic.

Honest limits

What marketing cannot do

Marketing cannot fix a release date that clashes with several larger films, or a film that cannot reach its audience through distribution. It can make sure that people who would love the film know it exists, and know exactly when and where to see it.
