Google Ads for a Local Business in Pune
Local search advertising goes wrong in small, specific ways: a location setting that reaches the wrong people, or calls that arrive when nobody can answer.
Who your ads can reach
Google Ads lets you target people located in an area, people who show interest in it, or both. For a business that serves customers physically nearby, the "presence" option, which limits ads to people in or regularly in the area, avoids paying for clicks from people who are only curious about Pune from far away. Check the setting on every campaign. The default is broader than many local businesses want.
Then decide the size of the area. A radius around a shop suits walk-in businesses. A list of areas suits services that travel to the customer. Look at where your existing customers come from before you choose.
Search words a local buyer uses
People often search with a place, or with words like "near me". Make separate keyword groups for the service and for the service with a location. Test the language your customers use: English, Marathi and Hindi words may all appear, and the search terms report will show which ones bring real enquiries. Add negative keywords for jobs, courses and free advice.
Make the phone work for you
- Add a call extension so people can ring straight from the ad.
- Schedule ads for the hours when someone can answer. A missed call is a wasted click.
- Use a tracking number or a call report to see which calls came from ads.
- Answer within a few rings. Callers do not leave a message and wait.
Where the click goes
A visitor who searched for a local service wants the address, hours, a way to call and proof that you are real. Send them to a page that offers those at once, not to a general homepage. See landing pages for paid campaigns.
Where local budgets leak
- Targeting all of Maharashtra for a shop in one neighbourhood.
- Running ads at midnight with nobody to answer.
- Sending every click to a homepage with no phone number visible.
- Judging by clicks rather than calls and visits.
Sizing a local budget
A local audience is finite. There are only so many searches for your service in your area each day, and that ceiling sets what a budget can usefully buy. The impression share numbers in the account show how much of the available demand you are reaching. If you already reach most of it, more money will not help. If you reach a fraction and the budget runs out early, there is room, but check that each click is bringing enquiries before you add spend.
Speaking to a local reader
- Name the service and the area in the headline, where it is true.
- State something concrete: hours, response time, what is included.
- Use the call and location extensions so people can reach you in one tap.
- Test wording in the language your customers use, including any local terms.
Measure calls, not just clicks
For many local businesses, the phone is the main route. Track calls from ads, including their length, and treat a very short call as a weak signal. If most calls are missed, the fix is staffing or hours, not bids.
A starter layout for a local service
| Campaign | Keywords | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Core service, with area | Exact and tight phrase for the main service and place | Highest priority, most control |
| Adjacent services | Related searches that convert less often | Lower budget |
| Brand and name | Your own business name | Cheap and protects against competitors |
| Emergency or urgent | Only if you can respond quickly | Schedule to hours you are open |
Seasons, days and hours
Search demand for many local services follows the week, the season and the calendar. Look at your own enquiries by day and hour and shape the schedule around them, so budget is not spent when nobody can respond.
