Conversion Tracking Setup
If the numbers are wrong, every decision built on them is a guess. Tracking is dull work, and it is where a great deal of wasted budget hides.
The events worth tracking on a service or lead site
| Event | Why it matters | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Form submission (confirmed) | The core enquiry | Counting the button click, not the successful submission |
| Click to call | Many local buyers phone first | Not tracked at all |
| WhatsApp tap | Increasingly the first contact | Grouped with generic outbound links |
| Thank-you page view | A reliable success signal | Page reachable directly, inflating numbers |
| Key page views | Shows where visitors get stuck | Too many events, all tagged as important |
What we set up
- A tag manager container, so tags are managed in one place and not pasted across templates.
- GA4 events for the actions above, checked in real time before they are trusted.
- Ad platform pixels and audiences, including the events each platform should optimise toward.
- A note on consent: what your banner allows to be recorded, and what it therefore cannot.
How we know it works
We submit the form ourselves, tap the buttons, and watch the events arrive in the tools in real time. We then compare a week of tracked enquiries with the enquiries you actually received. The two numbers rarely match at first, and finding out why is the useful part.
The problems we meet most
- Two tags firing for the same action, doubling the count.
- A form that succeeds visually but sends nothing, or a thank-you page that loads before the message is sent.
- Tracking that stops working after a site redesign and is noticed weeks later.
- Old pixels and analytics properties from previous agencies still collecting data.
A test you can run yourself in ten minutes
- Open your site in a private browser window on your phone.
- Submit your own contact form with a clearly labelled test name.
- Tap the phone number and the WhatsApp button.
- Check that the form email arrived and that you can see the events in your analytics real-time view.
- Check that the same actions appear in your ad platform, if you use one. They may take longer.
- If any step fails, note exactly which one. That is where to start.
Keep event names boring and consistent
Names such as "form_submit", "click_call" and "click_whatsapp" are easy to read a year later. Creative names invite confusion. Write the names down in one document with a one-line description of when each fires, and keep that document with your website files. When a developer or agency changes, the record survives.
Why analytics and ad platforms disagree
Different tools count differently. One counts the click, another the visit, another the conversion, and each has its own attribution window, its own handling of consent and its own way of deduplicating. It is normal for the numbers to differ somewhat. It is not normal for them to differ wildly. If they do, something is misconfigured, and that is worth finding before spending more.
What your banner allows
If your site asks visitors for consent to analytics or advertising cookies, then tracking will be incomplete by design when people decline. That is a legitimate choice and worth respecting. The practical point is to expect a smaller recorded audience than raw visits suggest, and to compare like with like when judging results. Your privacy policy and consent banner should describe what is actually recorded.
When tracking is worth more than more traffic
If you spend on ads and cannot say which campaigns produced enquiries, more traffic only adds to the fog. Getting tracking right first often changes the spending plan: some campaigns turn out to carry the results, and others turn out to be quiet. It is a modest job compared with a website rebuild, and it often changes what the rebuild should focus on.
Browser-side and server-side, in plain words
Most tracking runs in the visitor’s browser. Scripts on the page report what happens. That is simple, but it can be blocked by browsers, extensions and consent choices. Some setups also send events from a server, which can be more reliable and can respect privacy choices more carefully. It is more work to build and worth considering when advertising budgets are large and accuracy matters. For a small site, a well-tested browser setup is usually enough to start with.
A monthly tracking health check
- Submit a test form, tap the call and WhatsApp buttons and watch the events arrive.
- Compare the number of recorded enquiries with those you actually received.
- Check that no new script has doubled a tag.
- Confirm that the consent banner still behaves as intended after any site change.
- Record the date and any fix.
What this is and is not
This is measurement setup, not advanced analytics consulting. We do it so that campaigns and pages can be judged on real enquiries. For the wider question of what to measure and how, read how much data you need before judging an ad.
